On 4 May 1993, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Government of #Ethiopia issued an official statement formally recognising #Eritrea’s sovereignty and independence, following the #UN-observed referendum of 23–25 April 1993 in which Eritrean voters overwhelmingly endorsed independence. The statement accepted the referendum’s outcome as an expression of the Eritrean people’s right to self-determination, acknowledged Eritrea as a separate and equal sovereign state, and affirmed Ethiopia’s intention to pursue relations with Eritrea based on mutual respect, cooperation, and good neighbourliness. It indicated that the Council of Representatives, in its 68th session on April 29, 1993, resolved to accept and respect the choices of the Eritrean people for an independent and free Eritrea. This act constituted Ethiopia’s explicit consent to Eritrea’s independence and formed part of the documentary basis for Eritrea’s subsequent admission to the United Nations later that month.
